About Gustavo
Gustavo’s practice is rooted in the alchemy of the traditional darkroom.
His journey began in 2000 in a high school darkroom in Los Angeles. Although he later explored filmmaking, he ultimately returned to the medium that first inspired him: analog
photography. Supported by a network of generous mentors, he built his first darkroom in his family’s garage.
To master the technical nuances of the medium, Gustavo studied photography at several Southern California community colleges. During those years, he discovered large-format
photography. Its deliberate pace, technical precision, and extraordinary tonal richness resonated deeply with his way of seeing, and it has remained the foundation of his practice
ever since.
Today, large-format photography is the heartbeat of Gustavo’s work. In an era defined by speed and digital convenience, he embraces a slower process that demands patience and
intention.
This website is a place to share that ongoing practice with fellow photographers and anyone interested in the enduring craft of analog photography.
